Professor acts as the incharge

assigning responsibilities to various members of faculty and other
staff working in the Unit, supervising and monitoring their
progress. Also to serve on various college and hospital committees
in addition to clinical and teaching commitments. As a professor,
I have been able to expose them to various basics and clinical
aspects in the field of ophthalmology.

The Liaquat Medical College (now
upgrade to Liaquat University of medical & Health sciences) is a premier
and one of the oldest medial institutions of Pakistan. The Liaquat
university hospital is having 1800 beds, 24 operation theatre suites, 02
ICUs, 02 Radio diagnostic centers & 03 Pathology Diagnostic and research
Laboratories.
The Eye hospital has 3 units with 12
faculty members, 3 professors, 3 associates, 3 assistants and 3 senior
registrars, being housed in a purpose built premises. It has more the 100
inpatients accommodation. It consist of 4 operation theatres, equipped
with 4 operating microscopes, with teaching aids and C.C TV facilities, 2
phaco machines, 4 YAG laser, Fundas camera, ‘A’ & ‘B’ scan, laboratory,
pharmacy and a big out patient department with approximately 400 patient
attendance daily. There is a widely stocked library and air-conditioned
reading room. A seventy setter seminar room is available in the ward
promises, where seminars and workshops are held on a regular basis.

There is an active post-graduate
training program thought the year. During the last 15 years that I have
been associated with this department, some 78 doctors have been trained
through this program. More then 10 doctors have acquired FCPS, 12 have
acquired MCPS (Fellowship and membership of the college of physicians
and surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), and 25 diplomas in Ophthalmology (D.O).

Two doctors have acquired FRCS/FRCOphth
from UK.
The responsibilities of an assistant
professor include assisting the unit heads in the day to day clinical
work, teaching the under-graduate students. The position is open for
ophthalmologists with a higher diploma (as opposed to senior registrar).
The position is equivalent to that of a British senior registrar,
performing some tasks independently and others under direct supervision
prove his competence and surgical skill to the unit head before being
allowed to work independently.

This was my
first substantial job in ophthalmology. It helped further to
develop and nurture my interest in the specialty. The unit was a
teaching unit with a huge turnover of patients. It was equipped as
a district eye unit of the UK. I received exposure to various
intra- and extraocualr surgical procedures. The main advantage was
learing refracting in the outpatients. |
