Professor acts as the incharge of a Unit (Firm), comprising of
an associate professor, one or two assistant professors, one or
two Senior Registrars and a quantity of medical officers and
trainees. His responsibilities include assigning
responsibilities to various members of faculty and other staff
working in the Unit, supervising and monitoring their progress.
Also to serve on various college and hospital committees, in
additions to clinical and teaching commitments. As professor, I
had been able to introduce a system of rotations for the
postgraduate trainees so as to expose them to various basic and
clinical aspects in the field of ophthalmology. |

Consultant). The responsibilities of an Associate Professor
include supporting the unit head in day to day clinical work
teaching the under-graduate students and post – graduate
trainees and acting as a unit head in the absence of the
Professor. |

Assistant professor Ophthalmology (then Liaquat Medical
College Hospital) Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences Jamshoro,
Sindh. Pakistan from 18-9-89 to 06-05-95 (Equivalent to UK Senior Registrar /
SPR) The Liaquat Medical College (now upgraded to
Liaquat University of Medical & Health Science) is a premier and one of the
oldest medical institutions of Pakistan. The Liaquat University Hospital is
having 1800 Beds, 24 Operations theater suites, 02 ICUs, 02 Radio Diagnostic
Centers & 03 Pathology Diagnostic and Research Laboratories.
The Eye Hospital at LUMHS has 03 units with 12 faculty members, 03 professor, 03
associates, 03 assistants and 03 senior registrars, being housed in a purpose
built premises. It has more than 100 inpatients accommodation. It consists of 04
operations theaters, equipped with 04 operating microscopes, with teaching aids
and C.C TV facilities, 02 Phaco machines, 04 YAG lasers, Fundus camera, ‘A’ &
‘B’ Scan. Laboratory, pharmacy and a big outpatient department with
approximately 400 patient attendance daily. There is a widely stocked library
and air-conditioned reading room. A seventy seater seminar room is available in
the ward premises, where seminars and workshops are held on a regular basis.
• There is an active post-graduate training programme throughout the year.
During the last 15 years that I have been associated with this department, some
78 doctors have been trained through this programme. More than 10 doctors have
acquired FCPS, 12 have acquired MCPS (Fellowship and Membership of the College
of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), and Diploma in Ophthalmology. (D.O).
• Two doctors have acquired FRCPS / FRC Ophth from the UK.
The responsibilities of an Assistant Professor include assisting the unit head
in day to day clinical work, teaching the under-graduate students. The position
is open for Ophthalmologists with a higher diploma (as opposed to Senior
Registrar). The position is equivalent to that of a British Senior Registrar,
performing some tasks independently and others under direct supervision of the
unit head (Professor). The doctor needs to work under close supervision, prove
his competence and surgical skills to the Unit Head before being allowed to work
independently. |

teaching unit with a huge turnover of patients. It was equipped
as a District Eye Unit of the UK. I received exposure to various
intra – and extra ocular surgical procedures. This main
advantage was learning refraction in the outpatients.
